This past week, I was able to experience a new challenge, and learn so much about the area I live. November marks the start of bird hunting in Florida. For this trip specifically, the species being targeted were Snipe. They enjoy wet marshy bogs, meadows and swamps as pictured. In order to have a chance at these birds, you must trek through difficult terrain, creating many obstacles to be successful. This species of bird has earned it’s name largely due how alert, and evasive they are when testing your marksmanship. Their ability to detect nearby threats than rapidly take off in an erratic flying pattern make them a very difficult species to target. Although I didn’t bring lunch home from this trip, I took away so much from my experience.
Like many other styles of hunting, early morning, just at sunrise tends to be an ideal time to hunt Snipe. Staying hydrated, and carefully watching your step are important due to the wet muddy conditions. In order to be successful on a Snipe hunt, you have to stealthily approach your prey, and get yourself set for a shot, just as they are taking off. I found out quickly that traversing these hunting grounds was very physically demanding, and an awesome challenge! Every few minutes, I found myself having to trek across knee deep marshes, and frequent muddy bogs feeling almost like you were stuck in cement. During my time spent, I was able to stir up a few Snipe, however their ability to evade won against my marksmanship!
Our busy, on the go lifestyle often limits the amount of time we have to focus on our own personal needs. I often get asked “Doc, what is the best type of exercise I can do for myself?”. I recommend 20-30 minutes of brisk walking or similar activity when you first wake up. Your body fasts while you rest, and getting some physical activity when you first wake up taps into your bodies stored energy reserves, ultimately burning calories! Hunting proves to be an efficient form of exercise while also providing an ample amount of Vitamin D. It allows one to “disconnect” from the busy lifestyle, slowing things down and providing a sense of peace.
